The video presented at the last Pharma Industry Public Assembly goes through the history of the Italian pharmaceutical industry from the 1950s to the present day, highlighting the progress made through research and the goals achieved thanks to the determination of all players within the health system, united under the same belief: Innovation is life itself.
It is the history of our country, which begins with a profound transformation of pharmacies when chemical synthesis and new drugs replaced natural remedies, ‘turning’ medieval apothecaries into modern pharmacists. It was precisely in the laboratories of those pharmacies where some of the most important industrial companies in our country were born.
In the 1960s, the industry began to develop and more than 40,000 people were employed by pharmaceutical companies. In 1978, with the introduction of the patents, the research and development period for new drugs began.
The political and social scenario was far from static. It was then the time for rights to be established, with the creation of the NHS, which would fully implement the universality of the right to healthcare as established by Art. 32 of our Constitution, and introduce the innovative concept of ‘prevention.’
Until the 1990s, the scariest diseases were cancer, heart diseases, and depression. HIV and the spectrum of infectious diseases, which we thought had been overcome, reappeared.
40 years have elapsed since then, Pharma reminds us, with this beautiful video contribution, that technology and research development have made huge advances, moving forward together, towards protecting the most essential good of all: People’s health.
Today, innovative therapies, predictive medicine, and gender medicine are the new challenges being explored at all levels by all players within the huge health ecosystem, as we like to think.
